Madrid – Walaupun belum menjadi olahraga yang dikenal, namun pencak silat telah memiliki komunitasnya sendiri di Spanyol. Perkembangannya pun diklaim cukup baik.
“Waktu kecil saya belajar pencak silat yang diadakan di KBRI di Spanyol. Waktu itu hanya ada satu tempat latihan pencak silat di Spanyol, ya di sini ini. Tapi saat ini sudah ada 80 sekolah yang mengajarkan silat.”
Demikian diungkapkan, Sekretaris II Fungsi Ekonomi KBRI Spanyol, Ghaffar Chalid Lasiniy, kepada detiksport dan kantor berita ANTARA di kantor KBRI di Spanyol di Calle de Agastia 64, Madrid, Selasa (30/9/2014).
Ghaffar, WNI yang lahir dan besar di Madrid sampai usia 13, sebelum kembali lagi setahun lalu dan menjadi staf KBRI, mengatakan, banyak orang Spanyol memilih silat karena dianggap memiliki kekhasan sendiri.
“Mereka umumnya mengenal pula bela diri lain seperti kungfu, karate, judo, dan taekwondo. Namun, kebanyakan dari mereka akhirnya memiliki silat karena merupakan perpaduan yang komplit. Gerakannya terlihat gemulai, tapi sesungguhnya kuat. Seninya terasa betul. Beda dengan misalnya karate, yang terkesan lebih kaku,” tutur pria 37 tahun itu.
Dalam sejarahnya, pencak silat dibawa ke Spanyol oleh seorang bernama Juan Barrenechea, yang pernah tinggal di Indonesia. Ia lalu mengembangkan olahraga tersebut di kota asalnya, Bilbao, sampai kemudian berhasil membentuk federasi pencak silat Spanyol di awal tahun 80-an. Federasi tersebut bahkan sudah menjadi anggota PERSILAT (Persekutuan Pencak Silat Antar Bangsa) pada tahun 1984. Juan sendiri sudah menyandang predikat “Pendekar Suci”.
